Super Capacitors

Super Capacitors, also known as Ultra Capacitors or Double-Layer Electrolytic Capacitors, are high-capacity capacitors that offer significantly higher capacitance values compared to traditional capacitors while operating at lower voltage limits. These advanced capacitors bridge the gap between electrolytic capacitors and rechargeable batteries by combining high energy storage with rapid charge and discharge capabilities.

Super Capacitors typically store 10 to 100 times more energy per unit volume or mass than electrolytic capacitors. They can accept and deliver charge much faster than batteries and endure many more charge and discharge cycles. This makes them ideal for applications that require rapid charge and discharge cycles rather than long-term energy storage. Common uses include regenerative braking in automobiles, buses, and trains, short-term energy storage in cranes and elevators, and power backup for static random-access memory (SRAM) in smaller units.

Unlike traditional capacitors that use a solid dielectric, Super Capacitors utilize electrostatic double-layer capacitance and electrochemical pseudo capacitance. This unique combination allows them to effectively bridge power gaps lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes, making them perfect for applications needing quick, short-term power boosts.

Super Capacitors have also made significant advancements in electric powertrains. Their ability to rapidly charge during regenerative braking and deliver high currents during acceleration makes them ideal for enhancing peak loads in hybrid vehicles and supporting fuel cell applications. They are also extensively used in solar power systems, battery backup applications, and flash-light applications, highlighting their versatility and critical role in modern energy solutions.
